Sci - Fi Axe
Game Asset / Weapon Creation
I really enjoy creating 3D models and objects, so I wanted to try out creating my own weapon for a game.
Battleaxes really interest me and I had decided that this was the weapon that i wanted to create.
However, there's plenty of battleaxes out there. So I wanted to create something unique and add my own style to it.
So for this axe I decided to make the axe head a worn used piece of metal which gives the effect that it has been used to fight many battles, along with a sci-fi twist by adding a transparent glass column down the middle of an obsidian shaft which contains a glowing cyan crystal and crystal tube which the gives the wielder some mystical effects!
Since i did not have prior experience in creating a full fledged battleaxe, i first decided to watch a tutorial on YouTube and follow it along to create the axe. It came out pretty well but more importantly gave me enough idea to create my own version

After creating the basic shape of the axe, I used the sculpting mode on blender to create these runic shapes and also to add scratches along the whole body and axe head to add an element of wear and to make it look more used.
As the goal of this project was to create a weapon which was game ready, creating such a high poly object with so many details would be very demanding and would reduce the performance.
So instead I created a few maps to bake the details onto these maps to use as textures.
These maps were then applied as textures onto a low poly version which gave the same effect as the high poly one whilst improving performance and reducing poly count

As mentioned earlier, I added my own twist to this by adding a cyan color crystal with a crystal tube inside a glass column which was running down the middle of the shaft.
This adds a Sci- Fi element and also adding an emission shader onto the crystals to emit light, adds a cool glow to the weapon.
The obsidian looking shaft also adds some contrast from the worn out axe head.
After finishing the rest of the axe and texturing the head with a rusted metal and placing everything together, the axe was ready to be used in games
